Mardi Gras Magpie Collages
Coming soon on katybeh.com -
June 18, 2017 - My inner crow has emerged this spring during my daily walks on St. Charles Avenue here in New Orleans. For months now, I have been collecting fragments of Mardi Gras throws along Carnival's Uptown parade route.
My jeweler's eye (combined with ADHD meds) has buzzed with the seemingly endless quantity of shiny, sparkly stuff. My passion for artifacts and keepsakes has found a new canvas. My love for New Orleans' spirit, humor and history has deepened each day as it almost feels poetic to retrace and recall the Laissez Bon Temps Rouler that marched down the Avenue months before.
After each day's walk, I have been creating collages with treasures found only that day. The artist in me is also faithful to other non-negotiables:
I stick to a square shaped "canvas."
The collages are always created on my kitchen counter.
I shoot each day's findings with my iPhone using only natural light.
Each day's whole kit and caboodle gets swept into a zip lock baggie marked with the date.
I have no clue why I'm organizing and holding onto the bundles except I do know I am intrigued by the story this entire process records. I'll be able to find the words for it soon. I can't promise they'll be profound. Perhaps I'm just another New Orleans romantic.
As of this writing, I've created over 30 collages of all the stuff I've picked up. Here are a few to give you an idea of what I've been up to:
Coming very, very, soon you'll be able to purchase prints of my Magpie Collages directly from my website.
